Is this a good opening for a book?
Moister permeated the air. The taste of dirt was imbedded in her mouth. A cold chill began to creep up her spine as a dense fog settled deep in the forest. Maegan Morris had no idea where she was or how she got there. She remembered running for shelter after the storm hit. She also remembered seeing a flash of lightning, after that it was a complete blank. Over an hour ago she woke up face down on the forest floor with her duffle bag and her guitar. She had been wondering through the forest ever since. She was lost and there was no sign of a way out or any sign of life around her. There was no way of calling for help, her cell phone showed no bars just before it had died ten minutes ago. She sat down on a hollowed log feeling very alone and helpless. She was covered from head to toe in dirt and leaves. Her jeans had slightly dried and her shirt was still a bit damp from getting caught in the rain. It was getting late. The temperature was dropping quickly. It was going to be a very cold night. She would need to find shelter, and soon before she caught hypothermia. She stood up and started looking for any sign or indication of which direction to go. The nearest tree with moss growing on it told her that north was to the left. The ground was soft and pliable and she sunk into it slightly with every step muddying her shoes. Thank God I wore tennis shoes today. The darkness was dropping quickly around her and the sense of loneliness and imminent doom left her shaking with fear as she cried silently. Every crack of a stick or snap of a twig made her jump. The rustling of leaves as the wind picked up was an eerie sound. Finally she found the edge of the forest and waves of relief washed over her. About a mile from where she stood there was a very large stone castle. There were lights on and smoke coming from the chimneys. She ran for the comfort of shelter and sanctuary. Finally after what seemed like an eternity she reached the door to the castle. In a state of exhaustion and stress with her teeth chattering and her body violently shivering she was able to knock on the door before falling unconscious at the foot of it.
